Join us for the book club and the talk organized in collaboration with NEON BOOK CLUB. The reading session takes up The Transgender Issue: An Argument for Justice by Shone Faye, followed by a discussion among the author Shone Faye(via zoom), Yutori Takai, the translator for the recently published Japanese version, and the members of NEON BOOK CLUB. In addition, book swapping takes place before each session.

About NEON BOOK CLUB:
NEON BOOK CLUB is a community of book lovers who come together in an intimate space to discuss, listen, and perform. Neon has hosted events which discussed King Kong Theory, Frankenstein, The Membranes, as well as poetry reading and reading performance. Far and near, one voice and many, English and Japanese, past and present: we hope to create a space where they all intersect.
Members:
Elin McCready is a book freak who is Professor in the Department of English at Aoyama Gakuin University, with academic interests in linguistics, philosophy, and experimental literature. She is an organizer of the club events WAIFU and SLICK and a member of the art collective MOM, and does activism around LGBT rights and family issues.
Yiqing was born in Beijing, China, and was raised in Japan. Under the name of Loci she performs as a DJ. Her interest is in community organising and she works as an event organiser. At university she studies Cultural Studies and Political Philosophy.
Kanae Tanikawa, a member of the artist duo MES, is an artist in contemporary art and in the club scene. At 16 she was inspired by her “master” to learn the philosophies and movements of feminism. Her major was in art and, after her theatrical career, she formed the artist team MES which continues to be the site of her main activities today. She calls herself a stray researcher and organises at Research Platform FAQ?.
Yoshiyuki Ishikawa is an undergraduate student at the Department of Anthropology, University College London. Since October 2021 Yoshiyuki has been a member of the artist community UGO.
Guest Speakers:
Shon Faye is a writer from Bristol and one of the UK’s leading commentators on trans politics. After training as a lawyer, she left the law to pursue writing and campaigning, working in the charity sector with Amnesty International and Stonewall. She was an editor-at-large at Dazed, and her writing has been published by the Guardian, the Independent and Vice, among others. Faye also hosts the acclaimed podcast series, Call Me Mother, interviewing trailblazing LGBTQ elders. Her first book, The Transgender Issue, was published by Penguin Press in 2021 and was an instant Sunday Times bestseller.
Yutori Takai is Associate Professor at Gunma University specialized in philosophy and ethics, and the translator for the Japanese edition of Transgender Issue: An Argument for Justice, published in October 2022. They do research as a hobby. Takai’s publications include: Heidegger: Sekainaisonzai wo Ikiru [Heidegger: Living Being-in-the-world] (Tokyo: Kodansha, 2022), and an upcoming publication on transgender people (co-author) in 2023.

The artist Wendelien van Oldenborgh guides you through the exhibition and talks about the works, including her intension behind creating a large installation within the exhibition and the production of the new work of girls.

Wendelien van Oldenborgh and Yuka Kanno (Associate Professor, Doshisha University/Queer Studies, Film and Visual Culture Studies) talk about Van Oldenborgh’s works presented in the exhibition with the focus on the new work of girls, and explore the heterogeneity of being a woman and of the articulation of women’s experience.
Speakers:
Yuka Kanno is an Associate Professor at the Doshisha University Graduate School of Global Studies. Her fields of specialization include queer studies and film and visual culture studies. She is interested in issues of gender, sexuality, and race in film and art, and her research explores questions around identity, community, and activism in film and art in diverse screening practices. Her publications include Queer Cinema Studies (Koyo Shobo, 2021 in Japanese) and contributions to edited volumes such as The Routledge Handbook of Japanese Cinema (Routledge, 2021), The Japanese Cinema Book (BFI/Bloomsbury, 2020), Exploring Queer Studies (Koyo Shobo, 2020 in Japanese).
Wendelien van Oldenborgh:
Wendelien van Oldenborgh develops works, whereby the cinematic format is used as a methodology for production and as the basic language for various forms of presentation, collaborating with participants in different scenarios, to co-produce the script. Her recent solo exhibitions include work, work, work (work) at Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź (Poland, 2021), tono lengua boca at Fabra i Coats (Barcelona 2020) and CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (Madrid, 2019-2021), and Cinema Olanda at the 57th Venice Biennale Dutch Pavilion (Venice, 2017). She has also exhibited in numerous international group shows, including Sonsbeek 20->24 (Arnhem, 2021), Chicago Architecture Biennial (Chicago, 2019), bauhaus imaginista at the House of World Cultures (Berlin, 2019), Singapore Biennial (Singapore, 2019), Aichi Triennial (Aichi, 2016), and Kyiv Biennial (Ukraine, 2015).
