MOT annual 2004 Where do I come from? Where am I going?

With the proliferation of telecommunications technology and media, it has become a simple matter to obtain instantaneous images of events occurring in scattered places all over the world. At the same time, because of the speed at which things change from day to day, the events of the past and the flood of information in the present all become part of one shallow, uniform episode and it is becoming difficult to place the present in the context of a longer span of time. As the systems and conditions affecting us are being rapidly transformed, it has become much more important to think as individuals.

A tenacious individual viewpoint that grasps the present while also keeping the past and future in view can be seen as essential to the creativity of an artist, and this is the standard by which we chose the eight artists in this exhibition. A major theme in their work is the identity of people who live with the uncertainties of contemporary society. Another important element is the way they deal with time. As a result, the works on display here provide viewers with an opportunity to think about the possibilities of various media in new ways.
