Enokura Koji A Retrospective
Enokura Koji (1942-1995) became active as an artist in the latter half of the sixties, a period that saw a social tendency to question things from a most basic level. Influenced by the Mono-ha (School of Things) movement and the photography of Provoke Magazine, he began to create works based on sharp, physical senses and unique ideologies. Enokura's work first began to receive attention when he exhibited at "Tokyo Biennale 1970 - between man and matter" and the following year he took part in the "Biennale de Paris" with his work 'Wall', for which he won high acclaim overseas as well. Simultaneously, he was also active in experimental field, taking part in the "Space Totsuka '70" exhibition and holding the "Points Exhibition" at his own home. After staying in Paris in 1973-74 he exhibited at the "Venice Biennale" in both 1978 and 1980, showing unique works that utilized fabric in their creation.
Despite the development of his style, he always stressed the feel of the material he used, creating a unique feeling of presence while imbuing the works with an understated beauty. In this exhibition, in addition to dynamic works utilizing fabric and wood, we will also show his photographic works in an effort to provide a comprehensive view of the entire creative range of this artist, whose early death was a great loss to the art world and who is missed to this day.
